Austrian luge success story

Austrian medals became a tradition at world championships in Innsbruck-Igls. Markus Prock in the men’s luge and Tobias and Markus Schiegl in the double luge became both world champions and vice world champions at their home track between 1987 and 2007 and additionally became world champions in Altenberg in 1996. Furthermore, Markus Prock won the overall world cup for astonishing ten times, which is an unbroken record shared only with the Italian Armin Zöggeler. The successful brothers Andreas and Wolfgang Linger didn’t become world champions on their home track, but they won three gold medals in other world championships plus two gold medals and one silver medal at Olympic Games. With this unbelievable series between 2003 and 2010, the Linger brothers belong to the most successful lugers in history.

With two silver medals and one bronze medal at World Championships, Peter Penz and Georg Fischler are ready for the home World Championships. Together with Wolfgang Kindl (2 bronze medals at World Championships) they count as Austria's medal contenders.

Another successful pair of siblings are the sisters Doris and Angelika Neuner, who are responsible for Olympic gold and silver in Albertville in 1992. Manfred Schmid became the only Austrian Olympic champion in the men’s luge so far and became world champion two times together with Ewald Walch in the double luge. The most successful Austrian female participant of world championships so far is Maria Isser, who won the gold medal twice in 1957 and 1960. Legendary is also the Olympic gold medal of the double luge Josef Feistmantl and Manfred Stengl, who won Olympic Gold in 1964 in Innsbruck – the place where the Austrian story of success will hopefully continue at the luge world championships 2017.
